There are three basic ways to use essential oils: inhalation, topical application, and internal consumption.

Inhalation:

The inhalation of essential oils heightens the senses and can trigger numerous desired responses in the body. Below are several techniques used to inhale essential oils:

1: Direct inhalation - simply smell them. One simple method is the 'cupping method'. Place 2 - 3 drops in the palm of one hand, rub the two palms together, and then forming a cup, hold them together up to the nose and mouth and breathe several breaths, pulling the essence of the oils deep into the lungs, of course passing all thru the airways touching and helping all the tissues along the way.

2: Diffuse the oils using a Young Living diffuser which disperses the oil in a micro-fine vapor into the air. The Young Living diffuser will not heat the oils, thus ensuring full benefits, as extreme heat can damage important constituents in the oil. The diffuser is a 'medical tool'. You can use it therapeutically by breathing the essential oil vapors directly as they come out of the nebulizer - consult the EODR for the oils to use for the specific condition.

3: Fill a humidifier with water. Put a tissue or small cloth, sprinkled with a few drops of oil, in front of the escaping steam. (Do not put oil in your humidifier. It will float on top of the water instead of rising with the water vapor and may cause damage to your humidifier.)

4: Carefully pour hot water into a bowl and add a few drops of oil. Cover your head and bowl in a tent-like fashion with a towel. Breathe deeply and slowly.

Topical Application:

Apply essential oils directly onto the skin where indicated. Dilute with V-6 Enhanced Vegetable Oil Complex or a pure vegetable oil (e.g., Olive or Jojoba) before applying if dilution is indicated in the Application Chart. Dilution may protect against possible skin sensitivities. Key points of application on the body are:

To apply topically on any of these areas, follow these simple steps:

1. Carefully tip the oil bottle and drop 2-3 drops in the palm of the hand or directly on the desired application area.

2. If dropping oil in your hand, rub palms together in a circular motion and then massage oil onto the desired point of application. If applying directly to the desired area, use your hand to massage the oil in a circular motion into the skin. Repeat if desired.

3. Apply the oils in the way of the RainDrop Technique. Refer to the EODR for the explanation of the complete technique. We have a version we teach that was taught to us by Gary young himself in 1999. This version is shorter and involves less manipulation than is currently being taught, and is easier for a person to learn and use at home. We have this version on both paper and in e-mail format - please let us know if you do not have a copy.

4. Apply the oils to the feet, especially to the bottoms of the feet. Hot oils, including Thieves, can be added to the feet. Learn how to give simple foot rubs with essential oils, and as you become more comfortable giving them, practice the Vita-Flex method explained in the EODR. Use the oils specific for a persons needs, and offer foot rubs to help a person relax.

Attention: Essential oils are very potent, and some may be irritating to the skin. If irritation occurs, immediately apply V-6 Enhanced Vegetable Oil Complex or pure vegetable oil to the area to dilute. Please read label directions for each individual oil before using.

You can also create your own massage oil blends by mixing your favorite essential oils with V-6 Enhanced Vegetable Oil Complex or by using Young Living’s pre-mixed massage oil blends (e.g., Relaxation, Ortho Ease) to relax, uplift, soothe, and relieve. If you get 'stuck' and do not know what to apply, please let us know and we will help you create a system - or refer to the appropriate pages in the Essential Oils Desk Reference book.

Internal Usage suggestions:

1: Put several drops of oil into an empty capsule and swallow with water. We make a great blend we use almost daily with Orange (4 drops), Lemon (4 drops), Thyme (2 drops), Clove (2 drops), and Cinnamon (1 drop). We make up a batch in a 1 oz. bottle and then drip this into the empty gel cap when we want to take it.

Also, See #6 below for use of the YL Capsules designed for this purpose.

2: Add 1-2 drops to a glass of water or rice milk. We make 'Rose water' by placing one drop of the pure Rose oil onto a small piece of brown coffee filter paper and adding this to a one gallon glass bottle filled with pure water - let this sit 8 hours of more and you have Rose water. You can do the same with Orange, Lemon, Peppermint, Grapefruit, Spearmint and many other "Generally Recognized as Safe - for internal consumption oils" (GRAS). You may need to use 3 - 7 drops of these other oils to make your water the desired strength.

3: Put 1-2 drops onto a piece of bread or add to your meals when cooking. Add at the end of the cooking time so as to not evaporate the oils too much - as in Pasta sauces. Also, you can add oils like peppermint and spearmint to smoothies - use only 1-2 drops. We make our home-made Pesto sauce with Cilantro leaves instead of Basil leaves, and then add Basil oil to give it the essence of Basil Pesto sauce.

4: Add 1-2 drops onto a teaspoon of Agave (or good raw Honey) and swallow.

5: Drop directly onto the tongue and swallow. Exercise extreme caution when using this method. Many oils are very strong and should be tested by pouring a single drop onto a spoon and tasting a small portion to determine the amount of oil to be used. We use this method 'therapeutically'. We drop 1-2 drops of Myrrh oil on the back of our tongue to eradicate a cough or sore throat. You can also use 'Thieves' in this manner, but it will becoming irritating if the condition persists for more than a few days - at that point, use the diffuser, and the Myrrh oil drops.

6: Use the Enteric coated capsules from YLEO. These are powerful medicines - learn how to use them:

Inner Defense - with Thieves blend, Oregano, Thyme, and Citronella
Longevity - with Thyme, Orange, Clove, and Frankincense
Omega Blue - with Omega 3, Rice Bran oil, Lemongrass, Clove, Myrrh, and German Chamomille
Digest and Cleanse - Peppermint, Caraway, Lemon, Ginger, Fennel, and Anise

Saturation Levels

Young Living essential oils are pure, non-adulturated, and tested for quality and purity, which makes them powerful and effective. You may need to consider achieving a 'Saturation Level' of intake when dealing with an acute situation. For this, build up over a few days time, and be very aware of what you are doing and experiencing.

Saturation level relates in medical terminology the same as an 'effective prescription'. Think of getting a prescription of anti-biotics from an M.D. You may get a script for 50 pills and instructions to take 5 per day. If your condition is really acute, you may also see a needle and get an injection of some kind. This is a 'saturation level'

Now think of what you may need to do to get a similar result with these Therapeutic Quality Essential Oils. You may need to apply the oils externally with foot rubs and RainDrop sessions. In addition, you may need to breathe thru the diffuser 10 times a day for 10 - 15 minutes each time, and you may need to take 3 - 5 Inner Defense capsules a day for a week. Saturating your body tissues with the essential oils may be the dose you need to overcome your specific condition.

In the case of a long-term degenerative condition such as heart disease or cancer, think along the same lines. If you are diagnosed with Cancer, you may be scheduled for surgery, and you may be prescribed for 30 Chemo-therapy sessions, and then possibly radiation therapy. This is heavy medicine, indeed. To achieve complete healing with oils, you need to match the intensity with internal, external and diffused oils for as long as it takes.

In addition to the oils, you need to consider specific dietary patterns. If there are toxic foods you are taking in, you will need to reduce or eliminate consumption. You need to use oils, herbs, and fibers to clean your liver and blood, and you need to improve your overall nutritional status - begin here with Ningxia Red (NXR). People have used 6 to 16 ozs. per day as a therapeutic dose - always think about how severe your condition is and think of how intense a program you need to follow to reverse it.

*For the responsible use of essential oils, read the complete label on each bottle and follow the safety guidelines and tips found in the Essential Oils User’s Guide available from Young Living with your orders.
