Lavender Oil

Lavender Essential Oil
Burns - Relaxation - Bruises & Breaks

Lavender is the most well known of all the essential oils.  The fragrance is often associated with Grandmothers.  Let me tell ya, grandma was really onto something...  I use Lavender nearly everyday.  My friends thinks it’s my favorite, but that’s not quite true.  The truth is that it’s amazingly useful in day to day life.

For the Mind
Lavender is widely regarded for it’s ability to assist in relaxation.  A common ingredient along with flax seeds in eye pillows, the scent encourages us to relax, let go, and dream big.  When I am having trouble falling asleep I like to place a drop in the palm of one hand, rub my hands over my nose and inhale deeply for several breaths...centering myself and setting the intention to dream the night away restfully.  It works like a charm.  Children love this bedtime routine as well.

For the Body
I swear by Lavender for bruises, cuts, and burns.  I have come to the rescue with a bottle of lavender for burns so many times.  Two memorable occasions come to mind.  Once on a 3 year old who received a painful burn from a wood stove.  He was very afraid to have anything touch his “ouchie”, I coaxed him into allowing me to apply mother nature’s best burn medicine because it would make it better faster.  I poured several drops straight on the wound and it did not hurt.  His response? He smiled, he loved it.  20 minutes later, he was asking for a repeat application of the “magic oil”.  I sent some home with his mom and several days later they called to say that the burn has quickly scabbed over and that the scab had fallen off.  They were amazed that he had no scar.

On the second occasion my roommate spilled boiling water on her thigh.  This time the skin melted.  I asked her if I could pour some lavender on it.  She did not want me to and had many questions about the safety of applying it so soon.  I asked her if she wanted a scar on her thigh, because she was nearly guaranteed one with such a severe burn.  At that point she gave me the green light to apply a liberal amount of lavender on the burn.  Immediately the burn felt much cooler and she could relax after the painful shock it. She reapplied the Lavender oil several times daily and by the end of the week it looked as though nothing had happened.  Typical, predictable results from an amazing plant ally.

I also use it to speed the healing of bruises, dramatically.  Combined with peppermint it makes great first aid for sprains, strains, and breaks (note: peppermint does NOT go inside cuts).  In the case of broken bones along with western medical attention the combo of these two oils helps to rapidly heal and return you to pre-break health as fast as possible.  Your body loves and knows exactly what to do with the healing power of essential oils.

Lavender is also invaluable to my family for the treatment of seasonal allergies.  Just apply one drop to your wrist and inhale frequently.  We experience relief without the drowsiness of over the counter medications.

For the Emotions
Stressful day?  Huff some lavender oil.  Studies have shown that the inhalation of Lavender increases beta waves in the brain, heightening relaxation, reducing mental stress, and increasing alertness.

Amazing, amazing oil, powerful and so gentle... I use it on everything.

History
You think I’m sold??  The modern popularity of lavender oil is due largely to research of french scientist Rene Gettefosse.  After he severely burned himself in a laboratory accident, he mistakenly stuck his arm in a bucket full of lavender oil instead of water.  He was amazed by and got to experience the rapid healing effects first hand.  After witnessing his own speedy return to health he abandoned all other researched in favor of investigating the molecular healing properties of lavender essential oil alone.

History
The word Cypress means “lives forever.”

The use of Cypress as a medicinal oil and incense was first recorded in Ancient Egypt. The Greeks used the wood for sculpting statues of their gods because it is very resistant to decay. In Ancient Greek and Roman mythology, Cypress was dedicated to Pluto, god of the underworld, associating it with death and eternity.

For centuries Cypress trees were planted in cemeteries throughout the Mediterranean as a transformational symbol of grief and the comfort of life after death.

Cypress was used historically in the US by Native people to treat many ailments and in ceremonial burns.

Botany and Extraction
