The word Cypress means “lives forever.”
The use of Cypress as a medicinal oil and incense was first recorded in Ancient Egypt. The Greeks used the wood for sculpting statues of their gods because it is very resistant to decay. In Ancient Greek and Roman mythology, Cypress was dedicated to Pluto, god of the underworld, associating it with death and eternity.
For centuries Cypress trees were planted in cemeteries throughout the Mediterranean as a transformational symbol of grief and the comfort of life after death.
Cypress was used historically in the US by Native people to treat many ailments and in ceremonial burns.
Botany and Extraction
Cypress is a tall evergreen tree with slender branches, small flowers, and round brown-grey seed cones. Originally native to the Mediterranean, at present it grows wild in many parts of the world.
