This is one of the most useful and talked up of all the Young Living essential oil blends. Just about every loyal Young Living user I know names it as a favorite, and there is a very good reason. It works.

History

It’s unusual name comes from a band of 15th century spice traders turned thieves who applied the oils to themselves to avoid contracting the plague while they robbed the bodies of the dead and the dying. When captured, they disclosed the formula of herbs, spices, and oils they used to protect themselves in exchange for a more lenient sentence for their crimes. It is such a powerful and effective formula for avoiding the contraction of infectious disease that some 600 years later records of the ingredients in the infamous thieves blend remain. Young Living combined the original formula with what modern science has learned about the effectiveness of specific essential oils. The result is a highly antiviral, antiseptic, antibacterial, and anti-infectious oil blend that will continue to stand the tests of time..no doubt.

Studies conducted at Webster State University during 1997 demonstrated its killing power against airborne microorganisms. One analysis showed a 90% reduction in the number of reduction in harmful organisms after diffusing 12 minutes. After 20 minutes of diffusing, the kill rate jumped to 93%.

Here is a quick break down of the oils in the Thieves blend:

Clove is anti-aging, antitumoral, antifungal, antiviral, anesthetic, antioxident, anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory, stomach protectant, antiparasitic. Numbing for all types of pain and useful for throat/sinus/lung infections, clove also creates a sense of protection and feelings of courage.

Lemon has antiseptic-like properties and contains compounds that amplify immunity. It promotes circulation, leukocyte formation, and lymphatic function. A 1995 Mie University study found that citrus fragrances boost immunity, induced relaxation, and reduced depression.

Cinnamon Bark is one of the most powerful antiseptics know. It is strongly antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal.

Eucalyptus is anti-infectious, antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory. It’s aroma helps in clearing the sinuses and lungs.

Rosemary is antiseptic and antimicrobial. It’s aroma boosts alertness and eases anxiety.

Young Living has built an entire product line around Thieves. With everything from tooth paste and mouthwash, to capsules and a household cleaner; there are many ways to enhance your personal and household health with a Thieves product. I LOVE the Thieves mouthwash which is an amazing and breath freshening first line of defense against colds and flu. Everyone I know that has used it is sold. It’s a keeper.

One of the most convenient products are the Thieves capsules. Anytime I hear that an illness is moving through my neighborhood I pop several a day for a few days and am spared the experience of being sick. Knowing full well what I missed out on it, i am grateful every time that I keep a bottle in the house...just in case.

The Thieves household cleaner is another product I use regularly. It turns the mundane job of house cleaning or even deep cleaning into a positive aromatherapy experience. True security comes form knowing that you are killing the germs without harsh chemicals. I love how it makes my home smell.. rich and healthy.

Ps. The mouthwash, before a date... forget about it!

It was a common ingredient in ancient Roman love potions.

History
Cinnamon was so highly prized among ancient nations that it was considered a suitable gift for royalty.

In the bible Moses was commanded to use it as a holy annointing oil, in Proverbs it is described as the perfume for a lovers bed, and in the Song of Solomon it is used to describe the beauty of his beloved, cinnamon scenting her garments.

It was commonly used on funeral pyres and legend has it that the roman Emperor Nero burned a years supply of cinnamon at the funeral of his wife Pompea Sabina in 65 AD.

Up to the middle ages, the source of cinnamon was a mystery to the Western world. It is likely that Arabs established an early monopoly on trading cinnamon and kept it’s origin secret for hundreds of years. The Arabic story went that giant cinnamon birds collected cinnamon sticks from an unknown land where cinnamon trees grew, and used them to construct their nests. The Arabs employed tricks to obtains the sticks. Although this story was current to as late as 1310 in parts of Arabia, Pliny the Elder wrote in the first century AD that traders likely made this up to charge more.

Botany and Extraction
Cinnamon is the dried inner bark of an evergreen tree that is harvested during the rainy season when the bark is most flexible and easiest to work with. A wild cinnamon tree can grow to 65 feet high, but trees used for harvesting are pruned down at about 2 years of age to produce an abundance of finer bark-yielding growth. Once the tree reaches 3 years of age it's harvested twice yearly following each rainy season.

At harvest time the shoots are cut and the leaves and twigs are removed with the rough outer bark. The shoots are then beaten to soften the tissues of the inner bark and make it easier to peel away in a complete strip. Once peeled, the bark is placed in overlapping, extended layers then rolled to form long canes or quills that are sun-dried. As the quills dry, the bark curls and becomes paper-like.
Peppermint has an invigorating, clean, fresh, aroma. This important essential oil has been widely studied for its health benefits. This is an extremely versatile oil, one that I keep with me at all times. From freshening your breath to taking the joy of massage to the next level, you will wonder how you ever lived without it’s simple pleasures.

One of the oldest and most highly regarded herbs for soothing digestion. It is used for colic, cramps, dyspepsia, spastic colon, flatulence and nausea. This amazing oil is also noted for it’s supportive effect on the liver and respiratory systems.

Peppermint oil is also excellent for mental fatigue and depression, refreshing the spirit and stimulating mental agility and improving concentration. It is helpful in the treatment of apathy, shock, headache, migraine, nervous stress, faintness, respiratory disorders, dry coughs, sinus congestion, asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, and tuberculosis.

It works on pain and is an alternative to prescription and over the counter drugs in the case of toothache, headache, rheumatism, neuralgia, muscular pains and cramping.

Herb Lore
The word “mint” comes from the Greek name Mintha, a mythological nymph transformed into a plant by the goddess Persephone after she learned of her husband Pluto’s love for her.

Distillation
Peppermint is a hybrid of the wintergreen and spearmint plants. Growing approximately two feet tall, peppermint plants bloom from July through August, sprouting tiny purple flowers in whorls and terminal spikes. Simple, toothed, and fragrant leaves grow opposite the flowers. The oil is distilled from freshly cut, partially dried plant tops. These are cut just before the plants come into flower so the oil will have the best balance of fragrant constituents.

How to Use

My absolute favorite of all the oils, it has been considered valuable for balancing the body, mind, and spirit for thousands of years.

Useful for visualizing, spiritually connecting, and centering, it is likely the most introspective of all the oils. Balancing extremes of emotion and restoring inner tranquility, it is one of the best aromas for creating a meditative environment. It’s fragrance can be accurately described as the breath of a prayer.

It is one of the best pulmonary antiseptics available. In the respiratory tract, it clears the lungs and helps with shortness of breath, asthma, bronchitis, laryngitis, coughs and colds. Simply massage one drop into your hands, cup them over your nose, and inhale long and deep. On the physical level this oil works to slow and deepen the breath, so just relax and allow frankincense to work it’s magic on your health.

The skin loves frankincense as it balances oily or dry conditions. I love to massage a drop or 2 on my face, not only because of it’s reputation for preventing wrinkles, but also for the way it makes me feel...connected, rich, and radiant.

It has a long history of benefits for women, easing heavy periods, as a general tonic to the uterus, and for it’s calming effect during childbirth. An extremely loving way to welcome a newborn to this world is to add one drop of essential oil to some warm olive oil and then using it to give a full body massage to your baby. Any leftover oil can be massaged into a new mothers abdomen to speed recovery from childbirth and to restore skin elasticity.

History
The word frankincense is a combination of the French word 'Franc' meaning 'luxuriant' and incense. Also known as Olibanum, it was used by the ancient Egyptians as an offering to the gods and as part of rejuvenating facial masks. The charred resin from frankincense incense created the distinctive black eyeliner seen in Egyptian art, and inscriptions about it line the walls of their ancient tombs.

It has been used as a holy anointing oil in religious ceremonies and for meditation for thousands of years, and was more valuable than gold in the time of Christ. Considered a heal all in eras gone by, it was used to treat every conceivable ill known to man from baldness to impotence.

Extraction
Frankincense comes from a small tree with pale pink or white flowers. It grows wild throughout north-east Africa. These trees are often sculpted into natural bonsai by the extreme conditions of their desert environments, with eerily contorted trunks and stubby branches.

Deep incisions are made in the tree trunk causing the bark to peel off in narrow strips. Over a period of several weeks the tree releases a white gum resin which congeals into amber, red, or white 'tear' shapes, from which the oil is extracted by steam distillation.

How To Use

Diffuse/inhale for bronchitis, colds, coughs and voice loss, as well as to calm the mind, reduce anxiety, cultivate inner peace and to enhance all forms of meditation.

Add to a massage oil or bath water for colds, coughs, bronchitis, rheumatism, chilliness, poor circulation, exhaustion, nightmares, menstrual cramps, respiratory problems, mucus congestion, rejuvenation the skin and to help wounds heal properly. To prevent scarring add a few drops to the water used to wash a fresh wound.
